Save Our Buses

We care about facts. If any of these facts are incorrect, please provide the official Transport for NSW facts, and we will be happy to update the website. We have asked Transport for NSW for the Light Rail data for the morning peak between 8am and 9am, but they have not yet provided the specific information we seek.

We still don’t know the cost/benefit analysis between light rail and current or electric buses, traffic modelling, operating capacity of light rail, or full pictures of tree destruction. They have even appealed against an order by NCAT (NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal) to supply the facts.

Makes you wonder what they have to hide?

In the morning peak hour alone (8am-9am) 220 buses will no longer enter the city, due to changes from the light rail. Instead, just 15 trams per hour will enter the city from Kingsford/Randwick. (Capacity of 220 buses is 16,000.  Capacity of 15 trams = 6,750 passengers per hour. This is a reduction of over 9,000 passengers per hour!) Transport for NSW deny this claim, and now claim that light rail plus bus will increase capacity by 10% from Kingsford from 7am-9am, but have not yet provided figures for 8am-9am as per the business case summary.

This is a 60% cut in public transport capacity into the city. This cut will have to be made up with extra buses which defeats the whole purpose of having light rail in the first place.

Worse still, the operational capacity of light rail is likely to only be about 4,000 passengers an hour! (Based on rolling hour average loading Melbourne Trams and Studies of the Inner West Light Rail)

20 bus routes are to be eliminated:

  • All UNSW Express buses: 890, 891, 892, 895.
  • All Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls’ High School Express Buses: 610/610e
  • Limited Stop Buses: L94, M10, M50
  • All Stop Buses: 373, 374, 376, 377, 391, 392, 393, 394, 395, 396, 397, 399

These buses will no longer go to the city. 20 routes, and 220 buses in the am peak hour will no longer enter the city. Source is CSELR EIS Volume 2 reference below.

What can we do?

  1. Word of mouth – tell as many people as you can about what’s going on.
  2. Meet with, call or write to your local member of parliament or councillor and ask them what they are going to do about the cuts to our buses
  3. Join the campaign, donate and come to the next Sydney Light Rail Action Group. Contact influential people.

  1. This is just a ruse, it will not solve transport issues in the future it’s piecemeal at best. Why would you create another target ( in this age of terrorism) where people gather?
